If you’ve been itching to swap the Highveld for the neon lights of Tokyo, the cobbled streets of Rome, or a beach in the Maldives, your travel planning just got a whole lot easier. Emirates has announced that it has successfully restored 96% of its global network, marking a triumphant return to the skies after recent disruptions.

For those of us flying out of OR Tambo, the news is especially sweet. The airline has reaffirmed its commitment to South Africa, maintaining its robust schedule of three daily flights from Johannesburg.

The numbers

With services resumed across the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Australasia, Emirates is now operating to 137 destinations in 72 countries. Here is what the comeback looks like by the numbers:

  • 1,300+ weekly frequencies globally.
  • 75% of pre-disruption capacity is already back in the air.
  • 4.7 million passengers were carried even during the recent transition period.

High-speed entertainment

The onboard experience just got a massive tech upgrade. While we all love the 6,500 channels on the ice entertainment system (and the regionally inspired menus that actually taste like real food), the real game-changer is the connectivity.

Emirates has rolled out Starlink high-speed Wi-Fi on 28 of its aircraft. That means ultra-fast, reliable internet that actually works, whether you're posting sunset wing-pics to Instagram or finishing a last-minute pitch before landing.

Perks for the savvy traveller

Emirates is sweetening the deal for South Africans looking to book their winter escapes (or summer chases):

  • Flexible bookings: Any ticket booked from 2 April includes one free date change across all cabin classes. You can also hold a fare for 24 hours for free if you need time to convince your travel buddy.
  • The Dubai connect: Got a long layover? If your transit in Dubai is between 6 and 26 hours, Emirates might cover a 4- or 5-star hotel stay, meals, and transfers. It’s essentially a free mini-vacation.
  • Skywards boost: Between 8 May and 31 August 2026, Skywards members can fast-track their way to Silver, Gold, or Platinum status with reduced tier requirements and bonus miles.

Getting out of town

In addition to the triple-daily flights from Johannesburg, the airline is operating 10 weekly flights from Cape Town and 4 from Durban.

Whether you’re heading East for business or West for a holiday, the gateway to the world is officially wide open again.
