Two of the world’s most talked-about contemporary plays are officially heading to Johannesburg stages this winter, bringing serious star power to Sandton and Newtown.

First on the must-see list is Nick Payne’s West End smash Constellations, which takes over Sandton's Theatre On The Square from 23 June to 11 July. Directed by local industry legend and choreographer Jay Pather, this mind-bending romantic drama stars South African stage heavyweights Mark Elderkin and Mwenya Kabwe as a physicist and a beekeeper whose relationship fractures and reforms across parallel universes.

It’s an intimate, beautifully choreographed exploration of quantum physics, choice, and cosmic heartbreak that local audiences won't want to miss.

Prima Facie

Later in the season, the focus shifts to Newtown as the iconic Market Theatre hosts the highly anticipated South African premiere of Prima Facie from 17 September to 4 October. Suzie Miller’s devastating legal thriller, which absolutely dominated the Laurence Olivier and Tony Awards in London and New York, will be brought to life by celebrated director Neil Coppen and stars Danica De La Rey Jones.

Jones takes on the powerhouse role of Tessa, a brilliant defence barrister who expertly manipulates the legal system until a brutal assault forces her to face the brutal reality of cross-examination from the witness stand. Given its sharp critique of how the law treats victims of sexual violence, Coppen aims for the production to spark urgent, necessary conversations across Johannesburg.

The Graduation of K-C

As an added bonus for local theatregoers, Newtown’s Barney Simon Theatre will also host the world premiere of The Graduation of K-C from 5 to 29 November. Written by The Market Theatre’s own Artistic Director, Greg Homann, this compelling family drama lands as part of an official SA/Irish cultural exchange, weaving together the parallel, troubled histories of South Africa and Ireland through a deeply personal lens.

Booking is already open on Webtickets for both Constellations and Prima Facie, and with a standard 14 age advisory for both, these are shaping up to be the definitive cultural events of the year.
