It is a big weekend for the sporting women in the City of Gold as the University of Johannesburg (UJ) FC takes on Mamelodi 11 Stars Ladies in the SAFA (South African Football Association) Women's Provincial League.
UJ might still be in a celebratory mood following their 5-0 victory against North West University Vaal last Saturday.
Mamelodi too had reasons to celebrate last weekend as they recorded no losses. After a 2-2 draw against FC Raycon Ladies on Saturday, they went on to defeat the Young Achievers FC by 2-0 on Sunday.
The battle for the league kicks off at 11:00 AM at UJ as both sides are more than eager to collect points and climb to the top.
Currently, the hosts are sitting on the number 5 spot on the log with a total of 42 points and Mamelodi is two places below the university with 37 points.
While UJ is the undisputed football champion in the varsity space having won the 2026 Varsity Football Women's title last month, Mamelodi is not an opponent to undermine because since being founded by Banyana Banyana legend Khabo Zitha in 2018, they have gained great popularity and even host the local Tshwane Derbies.
The two clubs’ last encounter was on 11 July at the Muckleneuk Grounds in Mamelodi (Tshwane). While Mamelodi had homeground advantage, the match ended with a 1-0 win to UJ. Tomorrow their fans will get to find out if Mamelodi will return the favour on UJ’s turf or if the students will secure their second win against them.
Tomorrow’s other fixtures are Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies (Development) going up against Future Stars Ladies FC, Kaizer Chiefs Ladies vs Blue Birds Ladies Football Academy and Blue Birds Ladies vs JVW FC (Development).
