This May, Johannesburg’s cultural calendar gets a major boost as Ferre Gola, the legendary Congolese superstar affectionately known as Le Padre, performs in the city for the very first time.

While the Rumba Kong king is a frequent headliner at massive European venues, recently selling out the Accor Arena in Paris, the Saturday, 16 May performance at The Lyric Theatre offers a rare, intimate acoustic experience for Jozi music lovers.

Why it matters for Joburg

Now, I must admit that there’s something special about discovering a sound entirely new to your ears. For many of us, diving into the discography of an artist like Ferre Gola isn't just about finding a new playlist; it’s a form of sonic travel.

He is a titan of modern Congolese Rumba and Soukous. For a city like Johannesburg, which serves as a melting pot for the Southern African diaspora and a hub for pan-African jazz and world music, Gola’s arrival is a significant milestone.

Known for his velvet-smooth vocals and mastery of the rumba tradition, Gola represents a bridge between the classic sounds of the Congo and contemporary African excellence.

What to expect: An unplugged masterclass

Unlike the high-energy, stadium-style shows he is known for, this performance at Gold Reef City is billed as a live acoustic showcase.

Expect stripped-back versions of his greatest hits, focusing on the intricate guitar work and soulful vocal harmonies that have earned him global acclaim.

Promoter Bob Richard Makandalele describes it as more than a concert: “… it’s a cultural African moment, a celebration of African talent at its best.”

He adds: “Ferre Gola’s arrival in Johannesburg is long overdue, and we are proud to bring this iconic artist to South African audiences for the very first time.”

The essential details

Given Gola’s massive following across the SADC region, tickets are expected to move quickly.
