Time Out says

Set in the heart of Waterfall City, Midrand, Cowfish is easily one of the coolest dining spots in the area. I discovered it the way many of us do these days - while scrolling through Instagram, craving something delicious. Their ribs-and-wings lunch special for R189 immediately caught my attention. As a lover of both, I knew I had to try it.

I got into the car and headed to the restaurant. Waterfall City itself has a distinctive upmarket vibe, popular for both business meetings and relaxed outings. I visited on a Thursday just before noon, and the area was calm and pleasantly quiet. Arriving a few minutes before opening time, I was among the first guests, but within an hour the restaurant began filling up with groups of professionals, friends, and diners of varying ages enjoying lunch.

First impressions were excellent. The restaurant is visually striking, elegant, and welcoming, with natural tones of brown and grey, and warm lighting complemented by greenery throughout the space. The décor feels modern, and there’s also a lovely outdoor seating area that many guests chose, especially on the sunny day of my visit.

While I came specifically for the ribs and wings, I learned that the restaurant runs several specials, including a popular bottomless sushi offering on weekends. I happened to meet one of the co-partners, Craig Mhiza, who insisted that I shouldn’t leave without trying the sushi; advice I’m very glad I followed.

Drinks

I started with drinks to cool down from the heat. The strawberry mojito was refreshing, fruity, and looked good for pics. I also tried the cucumber & rosemary mojito, which also ticked all the right boxes. Both were beautifully presented and perfect for a warm afternoon.

The food

The first dish was the 'Let’s Meat' sushi - designed for people who may not be big seafood fans. It was outstanding. Topped with crispy bacon, avocado, and a rich wasabi mayo, it delivered a bold, unique flavour combination. The bacon and creamy sauce elevated the dish completely. I even phoned a friend mid-meal to say our next outing had to be here. Easily a 10/10.

Next came the dish that brought me in: ribs and wings. I sampled two wing flavours - the peri-peri, which was flavourful without being overpoweringly hot, and the honey sriracha, which was sweet, sticky, and delicious. Both were well prepared and satisfying.

The highlight of the entire experience was the Boss Burger, and it absolutely lives up to its name. Juicy, generously sized, and packed with flavour, it featured tender beef, fresh bun, balanced sauces, and creamy avocado. Every bite was rich, satisfying, and mouth-watering. If you visit, this burger is a must-try.

Service

Service was equally impressive. My waitress, Grace Garwe, was attentive, friendly, and consistently cheerful. I was also told that my meals were prepared by Chef Q, big compliments to him, because everything was executed beautifully!

Would I recommend it?

Absolutely. For one of the best burgers in town, along with memorable sushi and great specials, this spot is well worth a visit.
