Established in 1904, Johannesburg Zoo has been a beloved attraction for over a century, drawing visitors both from within the city and beyond.

What to expect during your visit:

The Johannesburg Zoo is home to more than 320 animal species including birds and primates, with a total population of around 2,000 animals.

It features 10 exhibits:

• Amazonia

• AngloGold Lion Enclosure

• Animal of the Amazon

• Ape House

• Cheetah Slopes

• Crocodile Country

• Education Centre

• Farm Yard

• Madagascar

• Reptile House

What’s on

Festival of Lights

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at Joburg Zoo from 27 November to 4 January during the Joburg Festival of Lights, presented by Joburg Theatre in association with Joburg City Parks and Zoo and City Power. Visitors can look forward to a dazzling display of illuminated life-size animal characters, entertainment, and a food and craft night market perfect for the whole family. Time Out Tip: Children under 3 years of age enter for free.  

Jazz in the Lights Music Festival

Jazz in the Lights Music Festival returns to the Johannesburg Zoo on 21 March, promising an unforgettable celebration for jazz enthusiasts. The festival will showcase a vibrant mix of local and international. Designed with the whole family in mind, younger visitors can explore the zoo’s animals and facilities, while music lovers unwind and immerse themselves in irresistible rhythms that are sure to get toes tapping.
