Where to Find the Wild Ones Near Durban

Where to Find the Wild Ones Near Durban

Durban, as the key coastal city of KwaZulu-Natal, boasts some of the most diverse and spectacular wildlife on the planet. If you’re craving a break from the hustle and bustle of city life, this east-coast region of South Africa offers the perfect gateway to nature. From the legendary Big Five to fascinating reptiles and an incredible amount of endemic birdlife, it’s a dream road trip waiting to happen. Now, let’s clear up a common myth while we’re at it: no, we don’t have lions casually roaming down the streets or giraffes popping by for a coffee. But there are incredible reserves and parks nearby where you can safely see these amazing creatures in their natural habitats. While the thrill of seeing Africa’s iconic wildlife up close is unforgettable, always remember: you’re a guest in their territory. Respect their space, keep a safe distance, and never attempt to approach or interact with these wild animals.  So buckle up, grab your binoculars, and let’s explore the wild wonders waiting for you in and around Durban.

Local Intel: Clement Pedro

Want to know where the locals love to go? In this series on Time Out Cape Town, ‘Local Intel’ taps into some of the city’s best-connected characters to unearth the corners you simply can’t miss in the Mother City. “Cape Town is a chef’s playground,” says chef, content creator and TV personality Clement Pedro. When he’s not in the kitchen, you’ll likely find him wandering down to Giovanni’s, savouring Cape Malay flavours, enjoying our award-winning wines, or simply soaking in the beauty of the best city on earth. But for Clement, it’s not just the food or the scenery – it’s the people who truly define Cape Town. It’s the warmth of locals who open their homes, share their family recipes, and embrace one another’s cultures.  We caught up with him to get an inside look into the places and people that make Cape Town so special – from his go-to local chef to his lesser-known facourites you have to try. Time Out Cape Town: Which Cape Town neighbourhood feels most like “you” right now – and why? Clement: I’ve been living in the Southern Suburbs for four years, and it has been amazing, to say the least. It’s like the South has an open door policy when it comes to food. Everyone is ready to tell you a nostalgic story about a dish or ingredient, what they had for dinner, what they’re planning on having for dinner, who’s baking the best croissants in town and who’s brewing what and when.  It’s a foodie haven and beautiful mix of people and cultures, not forgetting the wine farms litera

Single in the City: Where to find love in Cape Town this July

Cape Town might be ranked the 10th best city in the world to find love, but let’s be honest – sometimes dating here feels more like navigating a maze than a love story. Add dating apps to the mix, and it can turn into a full-blown swipe saga. Sure, dating apps let you swipe right from the comfort of your couch (and in your pajamas – we don’t judge). But with great swiping comes great risk: catfishing, ghosting, and the ever-dreaded “situationship.” That’s where we come in. We’re here to help you put your phone down and actually connect, like, real eye contact kind of connect. Whether you’re looking for the one, a plus-one, or just want to mingle with Cape Town’s finest and like-minded singles, we’ve curated the ultimate event guide to help you find your vibe. P.S. If this ends in a wedding, we expect cake. And an invite.

Father’s Day, Cape Town Style: Local legends share their ideal day

In the lead-up to Father’s Day, Time Out Cape Town is getting an exclusive inside scoop on what makes the perfect celebration in the Mother City – straight from four local dads who are serving up more than just classic dad jokes (though expect a few of those too). While the perfect Father’s Day might look different from one dad to the next – from slippers and sleep-ins to braais and beach walks – one thing’s for sure: quality time with loved ones is the real gift (no socks required). To celebrate Father’s Day in the Mother City, we asked four local legends (we don't make the rules) – all masters of balancing dad life with doing the most – what makes the day truly unforgettable. South Africa is officially one of the world's funniest countries

If there’s one thing South Africans are known for, it’s our ability to laugh through just about anything. We don’t take ourselves too seriously – and more often than not, that sense of humour brings us together. Take lockdown, for example. When Cabinet Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma defended the tobacco ban with her now-infamous line – "When people zol, they put saliva on the paper, and then they share that zol" – the internet did what it does best. Within days, Capetonian music producer Max Hurrell had turned the moment into the viral hit 'Zol', which quickly became a national lockdown anthem. @maxhurrell SOMEONE DO A DANCE FOR THIS 😂 #whenpeoplezol #zol #tiktoksouthafrica #fyp #foryoupage #lockdown #cyril #level4 ♬ original sound - maxhurrell Fast forward to the 2023 Rugby World Cup and the peak of loadshedding, and Mgarimbe gave 'Sister Bethina', affectionately called South Africa’s unofficial second national anthem, a fresh spin with 'Amabokoboko (Sister Bokkina)', featuring the memorable line: "We’re taking the loadshedding to France, boys." Cape Town Floods: How you can help

Cape Town Floods: How you can help

Cape Town has been hit by flash flooding following a Yellow Level 2 warning issued earlier this week by the South African Weather Service. As a result, parts of the Mother City – particularly low-lying areas – have experienced significant water accumulation.  "Low-lying areas, areas below steep mountainous terrain and areas near canals and other water bodies will experience localised flooding whilst rainfall remains heavy," advised Councillor Rob Quintas, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility. He adds that roads may be closed at short notice if necessary, in the interest of public safety and security. The Recreation and Parks Department has also advised undertakers and families planning burials to be mindful that weather conditions may necessitate shallower graves or the use of alternative burial sites. Thankfully, there have been no reported fatalities so far. How you can help There's no denying that the rising cost of living has been affecting us all, with this weather adversity adding to the pressure for some communities. If you're in a position to help, here are some meaningful ways you can support those in need. Khayelitsha Fashion Week is bringing the heat this winter

It may be winter in Cape Town, but Khayelitsha Fashion Week (KFW) is turning up the heat. Now in its 10th year, the event is not only a celebration of style – it’s a powerful platform for rising local talent.  Hosted at the Artscape theatre, this year's edition is shining a spotlight on emerging designers, models, and photographers from in and around the township, giving them a stage to share their boldest and brightest creations. Over the past decade, KFW has been a trailblazer in challenging stereotypes and creating space for underrepresented voices in fashion. “This is where we celebrate the creatives of our township, where we celebrate fashion as a whole,” says Bongani Matenjwa, Director of Khayelitsha Fashion Week. “So this platform, to me, means a lot.” Instagram: Khayelitsha Fashion Week Matenjwa adds that KFW is especially meaningful because it’s opening doors for rural and township-based talent – many of whom have had little to no exposure to the fashion world. Most of their models had never set foot on a runway he says, but after just two months of training, people who never imagined themselves in fashion now confidently own the catwalk. Khayelitsha Fashion Week will take place at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town on Saturday, 7 June, from 12 pm. Tickets are priced between R150 and R250.   TIME OUT RECOMMENDS: 😋 The best restaurants in Cape Town🍳 The best breakfast and brunch spots in Cape TownđŸ·Â The best wine farms in and around Cape Town🍕 The best pizza in

Wandering elephant seal, Gordy, makes his return to land

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA has confirmed that the wandering elephant seal, now affectionately known as Gordy, has hauled out again – this time at the Naval Base in Simon’s Town following quite the swim across False Bay. Google Maps Gordy made his first appearance on Tuesday, 27 May in Gordon’s Bay, Cape Town, during the early hours of the morning. He was discovered lounging alongside Sir Lowry’s Pass Road. What followed was a nearly nine-hour rescue option. “Wild animals don’t always follow the script, and this seal’s unexpected journey into a residential area created real cause for concern,” said Belinda Abraham, spokesperson for the Cape of Good Hope SPCA. SPCA Now, the SPCA has given an update, sharing that the internet sensation has made his return to land, but is in a safe and secure location with no immediate threats to his well-being. They'll continue to keep a close eye on his condition.  In case you missed it, take a look at Gordy making his unexpected visit in Gordon's Bay earlier this week: View this post on Instagram A post shared by Time Out Cape Town (@timeout.capetown) If you spot any similar incidents, call 0217004158/9.
