Single in the City: Where to find love in Cape Town this October

Spooky season is here, but putting yourself out there, mingling and maybe even making a connection doesn’t have to be that scary (says the most single person you’ll ever meet). To help ease those jitters – and because, let’s be honest, we’ve all heard awkward first-date stories – here are a few simple steps to help you feel safe and confident when meeting someone new: Share your plans with someone you trust: Let a friend or family member know where you're going. Apps like Life360 or even sharing your live location on WhatsApp can offer added peace of mind. If you’re using Uber, don’t forget you can share your trip status, too. Do a little homework: At Time Out, we take care to only recommend reputable venues and trusted events in and around Cape Town, especially in our dating guides. Still, it never hurts to do your own research. If something feels off, trust that instinct. Bring a plus one: Most dating events are group-based with facilitators present, so you’re rarely left one-on-one. But if you’d feel more at ease attending with a friend, go for it. There’s no rule saying you have to fly solo. Listen to your gut: If someone crosses a line or makes you uncomfortable, you don’t owe them your time. It’s okay to step away or end a conversation early.  But, without further ado, let's get out there and find love this October in the Mother City.

As a Capetonian for nearly fifteen years, I still find myself in constant awe, whether it’s the breathtaking beauty of the city or simply the privilege of being able to call this remarkable place home. Recently, someone asked me: What’s the best way to experience the Mother City?  The truth is, that’s part of Cape Town’s magic – there’s no single answer. You can wander the charming, eclectic streets of Kalk Bay, drive up to Signal Hill to catch a world-class sunset, soar above the city in a helicopter, or sail along the coastline with dolphins and seals making surprise appearances. From Ye to nay: Kanye West's Johannesburg concert cancelled

From Ye to nay: Kanye West's Johannesburg concert cancelled

Earlier in September, Ye (formerly Kanye West) teased a Johannesburg concert with a single tweet, and, in true Ye fashion, deleted it shortly after. But then, it became a reality... Ye's appearance was officially announced and he was set to perform at Ellis Park Stadium on 13 December. The concert, presented by Monyake Group, Jay Carson & Co., and Ticketpro, promised a full-scale production celebrating Ye’s 29-year music legacy – an immersive blend of art, sound, and spectacle. But the hype came with hesitation, and public trust was shaky from the start. On social media, many questioned whether Ye even knew he was booked for Johannesburg; the lack of concrete information, organisers with only 1.6k followers, and prolonged silence didn’t exactly inspire confidence. This uncertainty pushed people to dig into the legitimacy of the company and individuals claiming to be bringing Ye to South Africa – scrutiny that ultimately led the Monyake Group to issue a statement on 26 October in an effort to clear its name: View this post on Instagram A post shared by Monyake Group (@monyakegroup) In the end, the rumours became the new reality and Kanye's show was cancelled. The organisers have now released an official statement announcing that the concert will no longer go ahead. According to them, the project has been handed over to Yeezy Productions, "who will take over all future planning, communication, and execution of the event".
It’s official: South Africa’s first Walmart is coming to Johannesburg!

It’s official: South Africa’s first Walmart is coming to Johannesburg!

Update: Walmart is a solid new contender Walmart has officially opened its first South African store at Clearwater Mall in Roodepoort, marking the retail giant’s debut on the continent. We braved the traffic jam and eager crowds to stop by and found wide aisles, a broad mix of groceries, household goods, electronics, apparel and everyday essentials.   While many South Africans (us included) expected shelves lined with American goods, the store’s offerings are largely similar to what you’d find at major local retailers (many shoppers have compared it to Game of Makro who are also part of the Massmart Group), with only a small section dedicated to imported items, mainly cereals, sweets, and a few novelty treats. What does stand out is the fresh food section, which includes halaal-certified meat options, as well as a hot kitchen for ready-made meals, making it a practical stop for everyday shopping. The new store is also rolling out a 60-minute delivery service around the area via the brand’s dedicated Africa app, adding a new layer of convenience for local shoppers (YAY!)  In a landscape dominated by familiar names, Walmart’s arrival adds welcome competition to Joburg’s retail scene. For shoppers, another strong contender on the floor can only be a good thing.   After months of speculation following Massmart’s announcement that international retail giant Walmart would be opening its first store in South Africa, it’s finally official – the very first Walmart store will open at

Bafana Bafana's World Cup Comeback: Players to watch and the road ahead

Bafana Bafana's World Cup Comeback: Players to watch and the road ahead

It’s been 24 years since Bafana Bafana last qualified for the FIFA World Cup through the group stages. Needless to say we're pensive, but still hopeful with this World Cup 2026 Planning Guide. Optimism aside, we wanted to get the pragmatic take on Bafana Bafana's actual chances in the tournament. Sports journalist Cato Louw shares her take on what this moment means for South African football - and what comes next.  Bafana Bafana’s qualification is a historic moment. What kind of impact do you think it will have on soccer and sport as a whole in South Africa and Africa? “It truly is an amazing, memorable, historic and almost unbelievable moment given the route we have taken to get here. It’s historic because it's the first time in 24 years that we have qualified via the qualification route, meaning we took the route all the teams take. “Every four years, the host nation gets an automatic qualification, which we got in 2010. So, it’ll be the first time in 16 years that we will feature in a World Cup, but the first time in 24 years that we’ve actually qualified for one. “It’s a significant moment and one that is going to impact soccer in South Africa as well as Africa. SAFA are one of the biggest federations on the continent, so if we do well, it only bodes well for the rest of Africa. The better we do, the more eyeballs, more sponsors, and more people get on board with the team and the programmes. “As we’ve learned from the Springboks, when a team wins, people start believing

TEARS Animal Rescue devastated by fire: Here’s how you can help

TEARS Animal Rescue devastated by fire: Here’s how you can help

TEARS Animal Rescue has long been a beacon of hope for abused and neglected animals – rescuing, treating, rehabilitating, and rehoming them, while offering a second chance at life. As a pro-life, registered non-profit organisation, TEARS relies on the support of compassionate individuals to help fulfil its mission of bringing relief to animals in distress. Today, that mission faces one of its toughest challenges yet. What was once a vibrant sanctuary for furry companions has been reduced to ashes after a devastating fire struck the facility. "TEARS is on fire." This was the chilling message received by the team in the early hours of this morning. Speaking to Time Out Cape Town, Tinka Shapiro, Head of Fundraising and Marketing, explains that the fire broke out just after 5am in Sunnydale, Fish Hoek on a neighbouring property. Although the exact cause is still under investigation, she says that "it spread across the wooden fence and into the kennels".  Facebook: TEARS Animal RescueDamage caused by fire Thanks to the quick actions of local staff alerted by security, disaster was narrowly averted. "Staff who live in the area were alerted by security and were able to respond quickly and move the dogs from the kennels that were burning and place them safely in the clinic," she explains.
