Soweto

I grew up in Soweto. One of my favorite hobbies as a child was playing soccer - kicking the ball around with friends on streets, full of passion and possibility.
I always dreamed of becoming a soccer player.
Welcome to Local Intel, your ultimate guide to experiencing Johannesburg like a true insider. In this series, we sit down with local personalities, tastemakers, and city enthusiasts to unlock their most cherished spots, their go-to experiences, and the untold stories that make this city so utterly captivating. Forget the guidebooks, this is your direct line to authentic Joburg.
J Ross is a star from Soweto, the iconic township where two of South Africa's Peace Nobel Prize winners, Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu, lived.
The 42-year-old is a local and international award-winning singer, music producer, and songwriter. He has R&B, Kwaito, and Gospel albums.
The father of two has been flying the South African flag high and has produced music for the likes of Brenda Fassie, Lebo Mathosa, and Arthur Mafokate.
His radio show, The Foreign Exchange Show, which he co-presented alongside international star Arlen "GRIFF," featured South African and American artists sharing their stories, music, and art.
Today, Ross works alongside his wife, Megan Vuma, to change the lives of children and the youth in and around Gauteng through art. The celebrity couple works with schools and other institutions for their charity organisations.
Ross sat down with us to share some of his favourite spots in Johannesburg and why he is proudly a Joburger.

Soweto Theatre holds a special place in my heart. It’s where creativity is both taught and celebrated.
I did my first live recording Kasi Worship Concert there so it will always be a landmark in my journey as an artist.
Although Soweto Theatre remains my favourite venue to perform at in Johannesburg, my dream is to grace all the great stages of the city from Joburg Theatre to Montecasino, State Theatre, and ultimately, FNB Stadium.
Pimville Zone 7, where I was raised, will always be home. It’s the only township with its own golf course, which I’ve actually never played on but it’s just one of those cool, unique things that make Pimville stand out.
Orlando Stadium is another iconic space I love. It’s the home of the best team in South Africa, Orlando Pirates! I admire how the stadium also hosts concerts and gospel festivals. It brings people together to celebrate, forget their worries, and simply enjoy life.
What I love most about living in this city is the warmth of the people and the rich cultural diversity. It’s a place where almost every South African language is spoken.
Gauteng is truly the heart of the country. It draws people from all corners, making it a vibrant hub of unity and shared dreams.
What I appreciate most about Johannesburg is its spirit of opportunity. It’s the economic engine of South Africa, and if you stay focused and disciplined, it’s a place where you can build something truly meaningful, something that lasts for generations. The city’s diversity reflects the Rainbow Nation Mandela dreamed of.
This Mandela Month, I’m especially proud of the work my wife and I do through our non-profit, The SEED Thru Arts. We use the arts to plant positive seeds in schools and communities, inspiring transformation and growth. It’s our way of honouring Madiba’s legacy by making a lasting impact.
My favourite local designer and brand is Frank Bertelot in Midrand. His designs are stylish, proudly African, modern, and forward thinking. I own a few of his pieces.
I also recently launched the J Ross Eau De Parfum. I'm proud to say we announced the 1st edition of the Anointed Collection in June.
When I’m in Midrand, my go to restaurant is Turn ‘n Tender at Waterfall Park. The food and vibe there are always top tier.
