Welcome to Local Intel, your ultimate guide to experiencing Johannesburg like a true insider. In this series, we sit down with local personalities, tastemakers, and city enthusiasts to unlock their most cherished spots, their go-to experiences, and the untold stories that make this city so utterly captivating. Forget the guidebooks, this is your direct line to authentic Joburg.

Musician. Restauranteur. Creative force. João da Fonseca, better known as J’Something, wears many hats, but at his core, he’s a Joburger who’s deeply in tune with the city’s rhythm. In this edition of Local Intel, he shares his take on Jozi life. For J’, Johannesburg isn’t just a backdrop; it’s a co-creator in everything he does.

"Jozi shaped me. It’s where I learnt to dream louder and work harder. The city doesn’t give anything away; it makes you earn it. That drive shows up in everything I do. In the music I make, the brands I build, and the way I think about community. It’s not always easy here, but that’s the beauty. It keeps you honest. It keeps you growing."

J' believes the energy of Johannesburg is something Joburgers often take for granted. "The energy man. It’s gritty, it’s raw, but it’s real. This city makes you want to build something. There’s this deep pulse that you only notice when you leave for a bit and come back. We live in a place that constantly pushes us, and I think that’s a blessing."

From slow mornings, in creative spaces, to unearthing low-key food gems and finding constant inspiration at Artistry, this is J'Something's curated guide to Johannesburg's best .

J’Something’s Jozi favourites

Artistry in Sandown

When I want to feel creatively recharged, I head to Artistry. It always brings me back to life, it’s my second home, but also this creative playground where I get to cook, jam, host and just connect with people.

Artistry is a three-level lifestyle venue offering a seamless blend of dining, live entertainment, and late-night vibes. Guests can enjoy rooftop dining, followed by music or theatre performances on the middle level, and end the night at the lively street-level lounge bar. It’s a dynamic space designed to cater to every mood, all in one place.

When I want to soak up something new, I’ll hit up a local market or gallery, sometimes just seeing someone else’s passion reignites mine.

Father Coffee

My favourite coffee spot?  Father Coffee is a go-to when I want something strong and focused. Morning Glory (now closed) is more playful, and I love the vibe there. But soon I want Johnny Be Good to be that spot, a place where the coffee’s on point, the food’s clean, and the energy is unmatched.

Glory in Parktown North

A neighbourhood food gem that deserves more hype is Glory in Parktown North. It’s got this low-key magic to it. The dishes feel personal, full of flavour, with no ego. It’s not trying to be anything, it’s not. Every meal there feels like a conversation with the person behind it.

Franco's Pizzeria in Parkview

When I'm craving comfort food, I head to Franco’s in Parkview. That place is timeless. The food, the vibe, the people, everything about it feels like home. It’s one of those spots that doesn’t need a lot of words. It just hits the soul right.

Bassline in the city

A live music venue that gives me goosebumps? Bassline still gives me chills, there’s history in those walls. But honestly, our rooftop at Artistry has become that space, too. There’s something about music with a skyline behind it, stars above you and people fully present. Goosebumps every time.

Visit 44 Stanley

If I were entertaining guests from abroad, I'd take them to 44 Stanley. It’s a perfect intro to Joburg’s slower, more soulful side. Local fashion, indie stores, amazing coffee, and design that feels thoughtful. I’d take them for a wander, sit down for a bite, and just let the vibe do the talking.

Victoria Yards

A design space I love would have to be Victoria Yards. Victoria Yards is special; it feels raw and alive with a deep sense of purpose behind what the creatives are doing there. I also love Keyes Art Mile, it's always fresh and always moving. Great energy in those spaces.

iFuku Clothing Brand

I love supporting local designers, brands and stores. iFuku (you can find his store at 44 Stanley) is one of my favourites. Rodney’s work is something else. It's deeply rooted, super intentional and just cool. I also like supporting homegrown streetwear like Thesis or Float. Anything that carries story and soul, I’m in.

Green spaces

To rest and recharge, I'll go to Delta Park if I want nature without the mission. If I’ve got time, I’ll drive out toward the Cradle or just take the family somewhere green. And honestly, switching off at home with music and my people around me, that’s the deepest recharge.
