We all love a good ice cream but sometimes people want to switch things up a little bit. The summer heat is not going anywhere anytime soon and if you’re looking for alternative ways to cool down, frozen yogurt is the next best thing.

Popularly known as froyo, this dessert was first enjoyed in New England, USA in the 1970s and made it to Mzansi a decade later in 1989 when Marcel’s Frozen Yogurt opened in Stellenbosch.

But enough with the history lessons. The summer thirst is not going to deal with itself, so here are some spots in Johannesburg where you can get licking on some froyo.

Where to get frozen yogurt in and around Johannesburg

Smooch (Southgate Mall)

Smooch in Southgate Mall allows visitors to create their own dessert at the store’s self-serve creation station. Not only do you choose your cup size, but you also have the creative freedom to pour your own choice of flavours and add the toppings that speak directly to your tastebuds.

Their classic flavours are the original, rich chocolate and strawberry, and for those with a much sweeter tooth there’s Bar-One, lime and pink Nesquik. The health-conscious don’t get left behind either because Smooch also has tropical blends, mango and dairy-free mango sorbet on offer.

Getbird FROYO Bar, Parkmore (TotalEnergies Garage)

Remember Wakaberry? Well, the Famous Brands establishment may have left but the froyo is still very much at the TotalEnergies Garage with Getbird having taken over.

And it still works exactly the same way that you love and remember from the days of the previous store. You simply walk up to the counter, select your favourite flavours, pile those toppings up and then head to the weighing station.

You can choose from vanilla dream, island passion fruit and blueberry bliss. Those who know say it’s one of the most affordable dessert spots in Sandton but there’s only one way to find out!

Swirlz Frozen Yoghurt & Soft Serve Bar, Brackenhurst

This establishment is more than just a dessert spot but when it comes to their froyo, they follow the same fun, customisable format that you’re used to from traditional frozen yogurt shops.

If you’re brave enough to approach the Swirlz station then you’re on the right track. From there you can mix and match the flavours according to your palate and then get your dessert on the scale.

Theirs is a rotating menu but you’d typically choose from creamy vanilla, strawberry and Dutch chocolate. Depending on the season, you might also get a selection of fruit flavours or a dairy-free sorbet option.

Marcel's Frozen Yoghurt (Rosebank Mall)

If you’ve ever needed proof that South Africans love their frozen yogurt, Marcel’s in Rosebank Mall is it. This is the same brand that was launched in Stellenbosch in the 1980s, and the fact that they’ve not only survived this long but have also established a strong presence in Johannesburg says they’re doing something right.

The award-winning establishment is proud of its gluten-free offering containing only natural products and infused with live probiotic cultures.

You can still find their signature English Toffee flavour that they launched with in the 80s, but they also have vanilla, strawberry and chocolate with the choice to enjoy your froyo in either a cup or cone. If you like to experiment, you can also play around with the lemon poppyseed, banoffee, butterscotch, Turkish delight and summer berry flavours.

Amare Frozen Desserts (Delivery and collection)

If you’re looking for frozen yogurt treats across Joburg but just don’t have the time to get to your nearest store, there’s no need to travel far and wide to find this sweet treat. Amare Frozen Desserts brings frozen yogurt right to your doorstep, but unlike the more traditional stores, theirs is a delivery or collection service.

You place your order on their WhatsApp number 083 358 3986 and choose from their prepacked menu which includes individual sized cups or you can make your whole family happy with a multi-pack froyo box to stock up your freezer.

Frozen Spoon, Randpark Ridge

Frozen Spoon follows the traditional frozen yogurt formula where customers are able to serve themselves at the wall-mounted soft-serve dispensers and a central toppings bar.

There’s a lot to choose from in their selection of classic and seasonal probiotic-rich froyo flavours which are made with natural ingredients.

The fruit offerings are more on the tangy side with strawberry, mango and passion fruit available to choose from. But froyo is not froyo without the creamy classics so you can also try the vanilla, toffee or chocolate flavours.

Gino's Ice Cream, Krugersdorp

Don’t let the name confuse you because Gino’s has a standalone froyo selection for customers who want an alternative to traditional ice cream.

Instead of self-service, the store’s friendly staff scoops the froyo into standard cup or cone portions for you. They serve a single, quality plain frozen yogurt option that offers a perfectly clean, tangy alternative to their main menu to leave you feeling refreshed.
