With its cheap pints, live music and friendly welcome, The Fenton is one of the last city centre pubs not to have succumbed to the gastro-pub makeover
No matter how many once-dingy bars get refurbished and grungy areas become gentrified; there will always be those who prefer to sequester themselves into the comforting and shabby embrace of a scuzzy boozer. With its cheap pints, live music and friendly welcome, The Fenton is one of the last establishments around the city centre not to have succumbed to the lure of the gastro-pub makeover, and has instead retained its rock ‘n’ roll attitude and favour among students for many years.
A change in management saw the once rather dodgy watering hole become a fun and laidback location to sneak a pint in between lectures, celebrate handing an essay in or pay a visit to while dressed like a Smurf on the Otley Run bar crawl. The Fenton is ideally located on the busy Woodhouse Lane for both Leeds Uni and Leeds Beckett students to frequent, and seems to attract more of an alternative crowd due to its determinedly un-classy vibe, willingness to serve Hobgoblin, and regular rock and metal performances celebrating a range of local talent.
Elsewhere, there’s a poker night every Monday, open mic sessions every Tuesday evening, and a popular yet unconventional pub quiz on Thursdays from 8pm. Drinks are priced with the student market in mind, with pints of Tetley’s, Carlsberg and Carling from just £2, and there’s a good range of spirits, bottles and the odd guest ale on tap. There’s also a darts board, a pool table and a jukebox, making the place feel more like a clubhouse than a pub at times.
