Regional vegetarian meals are served in this serene curry house. The menu is vast, encompassing an array of treats that’ll even please inveterate carnivores.
With a constant stream of prestigious awards to her name, Hansa Dabhi has built an almost celebrity reputation off the back of her vegetarian Gujerati cuisine, and her knack for turning the most ardent meat curry lovers into daal devotees. Everything about Hansa’s on North Street is warm, welcoming and inviting – from the multi-layered dining and uplifting decor to the cheery staff dressed in bright saris.
The antithesis of the stereotypically noisy, hassled and greasy curry house, Hansa’s is a serene, distant relative that specialises in fantastic vegetarian cookery. Not that this detail should put off those who can’t imagine their meal without meat: the menu offers an overwhelmingly diverse selection of innovative and classic dishes.
Inspired by centuries of Hindu tradition, Hansa’s menu features a vast array of veggie dishes infused with exquisite spices. You won’t find vindaloo, korma or tikka masala here: this is regional Indian cookery that’s lovingly made and healthy. The best way to gain an appreciation for the impressive selection on offer is to share several small plates or starters, and scoop them up with rotli or puri, or pad them out with one of the six varieties of rice. As well as starters priced under a fiver, none of the main courses are more expensive than £9, and the set meals will leave you stuffed for less than £15.
Vegans will be spoilt for choice with a dedicated dessert section full of hot and cold puddings for no more than £5, and there’s also a small but well-stocked bar that serves moderately priced beer, wine and soft drinks. Make it to the end of the menu, and you’ll be treated to a heartwarming poem that sums up Hansa’s infectious ethos of warmth and tradition perfectly.
