This gentle, melancholic Thai drama gives a modern spin on an age-old story: girl meets boy, girl takes photos, girl’s hard drive crashes, girl loses photos. She is Sai (Vajrasthira Koramit), a location scout, who, on a recce for decayed urban settings for a film project, enjoys a sweet, almost-romance with an art director. But as time passes their time together now seems but a memory. But what sort of memory? Without the folders of jpegs there to back up her recollections, Sai’s image of the guy seems somehow less emotionally tangible, as if the convenience (unreliable, as it turns out) of digital technology has made her forget how to remember.

Director Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit unspools his story in 36 one-shot chapters, heightening a sense of temporal evanescence and lending a sense of delicate poise to this engaging, albeit small-scale vignette. Clever framing of the never-quite-there love object effectively implicates the viewer in the heroine’s emotional quest, an accompanying acoustic guitar score picking up the yearning underpinning this promising debut.
