Best Disney films: Bambi

Time Out says

From Disney's richest period, interleaving splendid animation with vulgar Americana. Babycham images occupy only a fraction of the running time in this tale of the adventures of a fawn; the rest is a strikingly impressionistic version of life in the forest and the meadow. Silhouette, panorama, and the cod use of classical music recall the best moments of Fantasia, while the animals are all given irresistible human traits: Bambi, Flower the skunk, and Thumper the rabbit ('Watchya doin' hibernatin'?') are like members of one of Mickey Rooney's gangs.

Tastemaker

Bambi! Who can forget that seminal moment in childhood when the idea of mortality (spoiler coming) came crashing into view with the shooting of Bambi's mother. Disney also doesn't shy away from the other facts of life in this 70 minute slip of a film. From twitterpated - read 'sexed-up' - blue tits to randy rabbits, there are plenty of innuendos to be had. But for all that, it's still at its heart an innocent exploration of the journey into adulthood. Told through the eyes of young buck Bambi, there's limited dialogue and much is seen through non-verbal interactions. It's a beautiful and classic look at the natural world that may seem quite dull to today's over-stimulated kids, but in its lush artwork and wonderful score still offers plenty to charm the viewer.
