What is it about the 1995 Rettendon Range Rover Murders? A trio of gangland hard nuts getting offed has now inspired three feature films: 2000’s ‘Essex Boys’ (solid, though names were changed), 2007’s ‘Rise of the Footsoldier’ (a shameless cavalcade of reprehensible carnage) and now this offering, sharing a producer and some cast members with ‘Footsoldier’. The approach here is more character-based, exploring the business and personal tensions leading up to the killings, yet these remain deeply unsympathetic individuals. The portentous direction (meaningful still poses and all) is seriously out of place in a bread-and-butter, homegrown crime flick and, without a micron of audience empathy, rather academic. The majestic Tamer Hassan delivers the definitive coked-up Essex psycho performance; shame the movie’s not sussed enough to make much of it.

this is by far a much more honest version of the essex boys murders than essex boys and far more realistic than the over the top but enjoyable rise of the foot soldier.tamer hassan puts in a top notch performance as the drug induced deranged pat tate as does neil maskell as craig rolf.terry stone gives a more subdued but good performance as the equally drug enduced unstable tony tucker.superb film.

cant understand how anyone can say this was good,im a fan of ROTFS and essex boys but this comes no where close,it was terrible, i am intrested in the case big time and spend half my life looking at benie site but as wrote in my email to him this was so dissapointing, hope the 2nd one gets called off if its going to be anything at all like this.
