Time Out says

His old producer, Hugh Stewart, used to reckon Wisdom was as close British cinema had come to a comedian in the mould of Harold Lloyd or Buster Keaton. It's certainly true that Wisdom was in his heyday a consummate acrobat with a knack for slapstick. But little Norman had a fatal flaw: he always sugared his comedy with spoonfuls of outrageous, cloying sentiment. This picture (which he co-scripted) is a case in point. He's a tailor's assistant with a beautiful singing voice. Unflappable straightman Desmonde is the faltering crooner who gets Wisdom to stand off-stage and sing while he mimes. There are plenty of laughs, but the script again relies on making us feel sorry for our poor mistreated hero.
