Ace columnist Peter Brackett (Nolte), a Pulitzer hack, is scooped out of complacency by cub reporter Sabrina Peterson (Roberts). They clash on the story of a train wreck, and spur each other on until they've got to the bottom of a not very interesting corporate conspiracy - and each other. Charles Shyer and producer Nancy Meyers usually purvey old-fashioned comedies with a topical twist, but this is just old fashioned: a '90s star vehicle transposed from the '30s. You can't replicate charm, however, and the Shmeyers' movie isn't witty or glamorous; it's smug and glossy, sparkling as tap water, and - when it finally decides it's a suspense picture - tense as an arthritic earthworm.
