Terry Jones scripted this fairy tale fantasy in which pubescent Connelly must negotiate the myriad dangers of a mazy goblin city and cross the Bog of Eternal Stench to reclaim her baby brother from the talons of Goblin King Bowie. If the narrative's an enthusiastic assemblage of elements from the likes of Maurice Sendak and Frank L Baum, Henson's Creature Shop were on hand to provide the necessary, and rather impressive supporting cast of assorted gnomes and pixies. Still, although the film's initial energy and engaging finale are rather muffled by a mid-section that spends too much time idling in neutral, you can at least wonder at David Bowie's saddest ever haircut (no mean achievement) and bask in the pleasurable sight of an ill-tempered gnome scornfully squishing sweet little fairy creatures underfoot.

Terry Jones and Jim Henson team up here to produce a masterpiece that is as much loved now as it has ever been. David Bowie stars as Jareth, a baby-snatching goblin king and the film shows Sarah’s (Jennifer Connelly) struggles to solve the labyrinth, within the thirteen hour deadline, to rescue her baby brother from being turned permanently into a goblin.

Along the way, a number of memorable and lovable characters some to Sarah’s aid, such as the large but friendly Ludo, who can speak to rocks, Sir Didymus, who rides an English Sheepdog, and a Hoggle the dwarf. Together, they help Sarah to solve the maze and its numerous puzzles, reach the castle and defeat Jareth, to save her brother.

This film is one for all the family and is loved by everyone I know who has seen it. A recent added extra is the release of a board-game of the film, which is a must own for any fan.
