Boyle’s first feature since ‘28 Days Later’ is a muddled affair that takes us to the north-west for a light-hearted family drama with magic realist overtones. Seven-year-old Damian (Etel) and nine-year-old Anthony (McGibbon) live with their dad (Nesbitt) since their mum’s recent death. A confused Damian converses with imaginary saints (St Peter, St Francis of Assisi…) and then secretly discovers a bag of money by the local railway line. His mission? To spend the cash before the imminent launch of the Euro (allowing Boyle to insert some awful faux public info ads, starring Leslie Phillips). Fantasy and reality collide here awkwardly. It’s hard, too, to take Daisy Donovan (dad’s new girlfriend) seriously since her deadpan comic TV turns.
