This is where it all began: to increase recruitment levels, police entry restrictions are lowered, and out come the freaks. The barrage of sheerly vulgar humour, leaping on sexual and racial stereotypes with ideologically dubious gusto, is enough to take you aback, with the casting of hardcore star Georgina Spelvin for a comedy fellatio gag (it doesn't help commander Gaynes' concentration as he addresses VIP guests) not inappropriate in the circumstances. The hit-and-mostly-miss humour proves so cringeworthy, however, your real amazement will be reserved for that fact that they sprang six sequels and three different TV series out of this. Marginally better than the others perhaps, but what isn't?
