‘Whatever happens in Corsica stays in Corsica.’ That’s the vow taken by Ved (Ranbir Kapoor) and Tara (Deepika Padukone) when they meet on holiday on the scenic French isle and bond majorly in this unusual bollyromcom. The pair agree to simply have fun and then get on with their respective lives. But years later, when Tara tracks down Ved in Delhi, she is shocked to find that he is a very different person – hating his humdrum life and weighed down by his demanding dad’s lofty expectations. Tara teaches this tortured soul to live again, on his own terms.
Director Imtiaz Ali’s latest admirably explores angst faced by middle-class Indian men today. Still, given that these topical issues also face many modern Indian women – career choices, a competitive workplace, success and family life – it is a pity that the focus is mainly on Ved’s life. Kapoor gives a strong turn but it is Padukone who rises above her sketchy role and delivers a warm and arresting performance. Oscar winner AR Rahman’s dreamy tunes are a bonus. This is a welcome study of Indian relationships, couples now feel free to explore love and life free from the shackles of a still largely patriarchal society. Cheers!
