In 1963, Brooklyn-born Jeffrey (Dillon) takes a summer job at the El Flamingo beach club on Long Island, and receives an education in the art of making money; his family, however, is dismayed by the boy's dreams of speedy upward mobility. Hardly original stuff, and morally the film wants to have its cake and eat it, celebrating working-class simplicity while revelling in the luxuriance of beach club life. But the performances compensate, with Dillon turning in a light and touching portrait of confused ambitions.
