Fond memories of Yogi cartoons may get you some way through this big-screen version – but the nostalgia soon wears off. A mix of live action and animation, it sees talking bear Yogi raiding pic-er-nic baskets at Jellystone Park with the help of Boo Boo. That’s until Ranger Smith (Tom Cavanagh) is told to clean up his act or lose the park to developers. Yogi and Boo Boo’s slapstick attempts to save the park are mostly disastrous and occasionally amusing.
It’s a pedestrian story and several actors are miscast. Anna Faris gamely scrubs down as an eco warrior but her comic talents are wasted. Dan Aykroyd has fun voicing Yogi and Justin Timberlake is surprisingly authentic as Boo Boo, but the 3D only serves to make the animation look more out of place next to the actors. Tots may giggle at the bears, but this is no crossover film for parents – a fact highlighted by the witty Road Runner short before it. Maybe some animals should be seen and not heard.
