A$AP Rocky and Wiz Khalifa both forged their skills on the streets. Rocky was born in New York City in 1988 and named Rakim Mayers after old-school hip hop hero Rakim. He’s been rapping since the age of eight, initially as part of Harlem’s A$AP Mob. Wiz Khalifa, aka Cameron Thomaz, started out on the Pittsburgh hip hop scene, though as a military kid he also lived in Europe and Japan.
Never mind ‘Watch the Throne’: here’s ‘The Wiz ’n’ Rocky Show’! These two giants of the US scene have each made Number One albums, and between them have collaborated with a veritable ‘Who’s Who’ of hip hop – so their joint tour is a big deal if you like your rap low-slung and filthy.
A$AP Rocky’s 2011 mixtape ‘Live. Love. A$AP’ was an incredible piece of work that shot him to prominence and bagged him a multimillion-dollar record deal and a fashion line with Raf Simons. Wiz also has a strong personal brand: in some parts of the US you can buy Khalifa-brand medical marijuana and rolling papers. Kha-ching!
Good to know
Rocky is an adopted Londoner. Earlier this year he was living at the Langham Hotel where he gave a gross interview about how much he loves drugs and threesomes. Back in April he was involved in an altercation in one of the Brick Lane bagel shops and got told: ‘This is London, bruv. Calm yourself down.’
What's your favourite Drake song?
There are few if any artists out there who rep the slick, emotional side of hip hop better than Toronto rap renegade Drake. Over the years the former ‘Degrassi’ star has proven himself a master both of R&B-style crooning and biting rhymes: a musical split personality which has earned him hits and Grammys and made him one of the biggest live draws on the planet.
