Time Out says

The Perhentian Islands might just be the most stunning in all of Malaysia. With crystal-clear waters, powdery white beaches, and lush greenery, they parade what eternal bliss might just be. On the main strip of Long Beach, the island’s longest stretch of coastline, you’ll find two exceptional properties that share the Bubu name: the charming, welcoming Bubu Hotel, and just a short stroll away, the more exclusive Bubu Villas.

Together, they perfectly encapsulate the joys of island life, providing visitors with beautifully comfortable accommodations, attentive service, delicious food, and various dining and drinking options. Guests can take comfort in the fact that they’re never too far away from a refreshing drink or a delicious meal. This is the perfect place to kick back and unwind.

Why stay at Bubu Resort?

Staying at Bubu means you get the best of the Perenthians. On your doorstep, you have secluded beaches, marine life (we saw lots of turtles on the shore) and genuine hospitality. Unlike many other hotels on the coast that feel too rustic or overly commercial, Bubu strikes a balance. It is a hotel that feels considered and well looked after, but with its palm-thatched roofs, it also stays true to the island’s vibe.

What are the rooms like at Bubu Resort?
Bubu Hotel offers simple but well-thought-out rooms that are light, airy, and comfortable. The interiors blend a minimalist style with modern conveniences; think crisp linens, ceiling fans paired with air conditioning, and tasteful wooden furnishings. Rooms are not huge, but they’re fit for relaxation after a day in the sun and sea. Large windows let in natural light and views of the hotel and the bordering ocean.

Bubu Villas, meanwhile, elevate the experience. These standalone villas boast generous living spaces with high ceilings and open-plan designs that merge indoor comfort with outdoor sunny living. Many villas come with private plunge pools, which are absolute heaven and open-air bathrooms that make showering feel like a rainforest experience. The villas’ locations vary in privacy, with some set closer to the main path and others tucked further back among trees for more seclusion. Wherever you stay at Bubu, you’re sure to leave completely rejuvenated and at peace, after being immersed in the soothing embrace of the island’s natural beauty.

Both accommodations come with reliable Wi-Fi, daily housekeeping, and complimentary bottled water, tea and coffee, ensuring guests have everything they need for a stress-free stay.

What are the best things to eat at Bubu Resort?

Food at Bubu has a loveable family feel, with the on-site restaurant Santai delivering a delightful blend of local and international flavours. Even if you’re not staying at Bubu, a trip to Santai is an absolute must: the emphasis on fresh, locally sourced seafood means dishes like grilled seabass go down a treat. Breakfast options are equally solid: order eggs to your liking, melon cut freshly each morning or take a portion of the noodles that are cooked to perfection. Don’t forget to ask at the bar for the morning’s fresh juice selection.

While the menu caters well to Western palates with options like pasta and salads, it’s when the kitchen embraces authentic Malaysian and Thai flavours that it truly shines. The balance between hearty, familiar comfort food and bold local dishes makes dining at Bubu consistently enjoyable.

What are the best things to drink at Bubu Resort?

Bubu’s bar culture harmonises with the chilled-out island lifestyle. Each guest can have a complimentary daily sunset cocktail – during my stay, this quickly becomes a favourite ritual. The bar staff are friendly and happy to pour out classic cocktails as well as more creative concoctions with local fruits and spirits. Non-alcoholic options are just as impressive, with fresh coconut shakes, homemade iced teas, and an assortment of fresh juices ensuring everyone finds a refreshing drink.

What is the service like at Bubu Resort?

By the end of my stay at Bubu, some staff felt like genuine friends (shoutout to Nina). From the moment you arrive, the team goes out of their way to learn your name and tailor their service to your needs, creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere that stays with you.

Local guides are ready to ship you away to snorkel in nearby reefs or organise a sunset cruise and snacks. The front desk is consistently staffed with friendly faces, ensuring help is never too far away. It’s a service style that feels sincere and never forced.

What are the facilities like at Bubu Resort?

The main appeal of Bubu is undoubtedly its stunning beachfront location. However, the hotel also houses well-maintained facilities that elevate your stay. When the Malaysian sun gets too intense, the spa offers a range of local treatments perfect for unwinding and rejuvenating. Each morning, you can check in at reception for a full list of daily activities arranged by the team. We enjoyed snorkelling excursions, sunset boat trips, and even a memorable beachside dinner under the stars during our stay.

What’s the area like around Bubu Resort?

Long Beach is the heart of the Perenthian Islands. Just walk down it and you’ll see the shore alive with beach bars, diving schools and local Malaysian diners. You can hike around the island or take a boat to nearby coves. Fire shows and dancing keep the evenings awake, while the daytime is best spent tanning or in the sea.

Why should you book a stay at Bubu Resort?

Bubu Hotel and Villas offer a truly exceptional Perhentian Islands experience. Whether you’re seeking a romantic getaway, an adventure with friends, or a retreat to recharge, Bubu provides all the essentials and then some.

With the sea breeze constant and staff on hand to help you out, Bubu strikes the perfect balance between simplicity and comfort. The surroundings are beautiful, and you feel at home instantly. If you plan to visit this slice of Malaysian paradise, Bubu Hotel and Villas should be at the top of your list.
