With the news that a Manchester institution will close its doors for the final time on May 31 after 22 years, a ripple of sadness has enveloped the city's gig-going people.

Great names like White Stripes, Muse and Elbow all cut their musical teeth at The Roadhouse and many a memory of a great night out will accompany the club's closure.

But the owner, Kate Mountain, is also the co-owner of what was once Aumbry in Prestwich, so it's out with the old and in with the new. Yes, the site of some of the most filthy, grungey, booze and chemically enhanced nights out in all of Manchester clubland is going to get a good scrub and become home to the next incarnation of the posh nosh restaurant.

Details are yet to be revealed of when it will open or what it will be called, so watch this space.

In the meantime, you can see 30 fantastic images from Al Baker's Roadhouse archive, or remind yourself of some great bands who have played there.
