In this edition: a look at two new bars coming to Manchester and the loss of a well-known city centre pub.

Sad news to start off with this edition as it was revealed the Ducie Bridge pub near Victoria has closed its doors and looks likely to be demolished as part of Co-operative’s ‘NOMA’ redevelopment plans in the area.

Long known for its association with the city’s music scene, the pub has now hosted its last gig and served its final pint. According to the NOMA website, the site has been earmarked for office space. It’s not the only city centre pub to be lost as part of the Co-op’s plans – a nearby pub, the Crown and Cushion, shut its doors in early 2011.

That's not all for NOMA-related pub news: the team behind the development are planning a mobile bar for the area. Plans have been lodged for moveable boozer The Pilcrow, which will be built using traditional construction crafts and crowd-sourced labour. Every element will be made using traditional skills – from the glasses to the building itself. Expected to open in autumn 2016, it’ll mainly be based alongside the new yet-to-be-named square although it will move around the local area.

Another newbie planned for Manchester city centre is The Brink. Set in a basement with an entrance on Bridge Street, the bar will focus on real ale from microbreweries in Manchester with six cask ales on a rotational basis and ciders from local producers. Gareth Williams, who’s behind the venture, says he’s aiming to create a simple, comfortable space where people can just focus on enjoying the beers and each other’s company. Depending on planning approval, they’re aiming to be open by mid-November.

In other news:

The official launch date has been confirmed for Indy Man Beer Con. Breweries, food traders and details on events will be unveiled at Port Street Beer House on September 9 from 7pm. Beers from some of the breweries and collaborators will also be on offer.

As it’s Levy Beer Fete this weekend, Blackjack won’t be hosting their brewtap event. But never fear, neighbours Runaway will be opening their doors. The cosy tap room will be serving up a range of beers to sample 1-7pm and tours will also be running.

Thirsty? Why not try one of these seven great beers made in Manchester?
