Is your mum more into real ale rather than roses, or The Smiths instead of spa days? Check out some of these events and experiences in Manchester for a Mother’s Day gift with a difference.

East Lancashire Railway
The East Lancashire Railway, the heritage line operating from Heywood to Rawtenstall via Bury and Ramsbottom, is offering a three-course Mother’s Day lunch on their luxury dining carriages. Or if you just fancy a trip on the steam trains, or to try the Rail Ale Trail, mums are offered free travel on Mother’s Day.

Coronation Street tour
How about a stroll down Corrie’s famous cobbles? The Coronation Street tour at the former ITV Studios just off Quay Street allows visitors to explore the sets, get a photo taken outside the Rovers Return and see a range of props and memorabilia from the show’s history. Tours take place daily, including on Mother’s Day.

John Rylands Library photography tour
Is your mum a budding photographer? The striking John Rylands Library on Deansgate opens its doors regularly for photography tours, with access to areas of the building which are not normally open to the public. It’s free entry, although advance booking is required, and there is a tour running at 11am on Mother’s Day.

Factory Records/Manchester music walking tour
From The Smiths to Oasis, The Fall to Happy Mondays, Manchester is known across the world for its musical heritage. New Manchester Walks offer regular walking tours exploring the city’s musical history, including a tour on Mother’s Day at noon. It starts at the Knott Bar and costs £7, with no pre-booking required.

Sound of Music sing-a-long
It’s the 50th anniversary of the classic musical telling the story of the Von Trapp family, set within the stunning Austrian city of Salzburg, and to mark the occasion the Opera House is hosting a screening of the Julie Andrews film complete with lyric subtitles so the audience can join in on Mother’s Day. The show also features a vocal warm-up, fancy dress competition and a commemorative pack, so get practicing your best Maria impression!

Afternoon tea with a difference
If your mum is a bit of a foodie, Ning in the Northern Quarter are offering a Malaysian High Tea on Mother’s Day – providing heritage cuisine with a twist. It includes a selection of Malaysian and fusion sweets and snacks prepared by chef Norman Musa and his team, along with a pot of Malaysian-grown tea.
