As Movember returns, men everywhere start to consider the state of their facial hair. Beards. Are they in now or out? Apparently now that they're all over Top Man's windows, that's it, they're officially last year. But there are still plenty of them around, particularly if you go wandering in the Northern Quarter, where well shaped beards and skinny pants are still doing the rounds.
So, if you're considering getting rid of the bush or merely taking it back a little, who can you trust with the thing you've been lovingly nurturing for weeks, months or even years? Here are 3 of the best in the city-centre.
The Manchester Salon For value for money, this place is hard to beat. It's a unisex salon on the edge of the Northern Quarter, where a chap can get a beard trim or a full hot towel/cut throat shave. Appointments aren't always needed so just nip in, ask for James and he'll sort you out with the best person for the job. (If you get your hair done too, the head massage with your shampoo is worth the price alone).
Beard shaping: £10
Wet shave: £10
You could easily walk in here and think you'd accidentally stumbled upon a gay fetish bar, devoted to facial hair and shaving, so immaculate is the masculinity on show. It also feels like a small tip might result in your throat getting slit. But if you can get beyond the machismo, you'll get a cut that's second to none.
Beard shaping: £19
Wet shave: £25
With no appointments at this stylish traditional barber shop, you may find yourself taking a seat and flicking through the messages on your phone while you wait for a free chair. But once you get in it, you'll be glad you sat in line - the reassuring hand of a barber who knows what he's doing makes light work of a very fine cut indeed. And at these prices, it's a bargain too.
Prices start from £6
