This four-act opera by Jules Massenet is a work of devastating simplicity. Inspired by Goethe’s epistolary novel The Sorrows of Young Werther, it follows the title character, a disconsolate poet, who falls in love with a woman otherwise engaged, his pent-up passion spiraling toward tragic ends.
