It's been too long, Montreal: One of our favourite things to do during the fall season in this city, just as the summer is ending, has been going to the Botanical Garden to bundle up a bit and pack a thermos to see the Chinese Lantern Festival, or Gardens of Light. Last year forced a cancellation of the annual event, but it's finally returning for another year.

From September 3 to October 31, every evening from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., the 2021 edition of Gardens of Light will be themed after 'An ode to the Moon'. Starting this weekend, ithe two month-long evening event will be spread out across the Montreal Botanical Garden's Japanese, First Nations, and Chinese Gardens. Hundreds of lanterns will be on display this year, and as many as 500 people can explore the space per half hour.

Incorporating Indigenous storytellers and artists who will occasionally do fireside performances as part of the Botanical Garden's Autumn moons exhibit, visitors who have been before can expect new developments, as organizers have developed immersive and sensory experiences that combine art, science, and technology.

A week after the Gardens of Light begins, there will be a Chinese shadow puppetry show from September 10 to October 31 happening every weekend in the Chinese gardens. Entitled Pangu and the four animals: The magic continues, families can watch a show put through only fabric veils and lantern before they make a shadow puppet of their own.

Tickets for the Gardens of Light event can be purchased here; Quebec resident adults pay $16.50, seniors $15.50, students pay $12.75, and children ages 5 to 17 cost $8.25. Visitors from outside Quebec can expect to pay roughly $2 to $5 more on each price.

The vaccine passport will be mandatory for persons 13 years of age and older, as per government requirements.
