In Ned Farr's topical take on "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," outed Marine officer Alexandra Everett (Weber) is discharged from the service. After returning home, she occupies herself by rehabilitating a troubled female teen (Packard) who's being forced to enlist (or be incarcerated) by prepping her for military life. While A Marine Story effectively evokes the fear with which gay service people (as well as queer small-town denizens) are forced to live, the film stumbles through rounds of ham-fisted melodrama involving forced outings---in addition to heartily endorsing Surge-era enlistment as the sole honorable way out from odunk methland hell.
