Turkish ladies’ man Alper is one of those satin-shirt-and-jeans-wearing, commitment-phobic sleazebags who looks like he’s been peeled straight off the pages of Men’s Health. He is played, unsympathetically, by young Max von Sydow lookalike Cemal Hunal in this Nick Hornby-lite romantic drama which follows the thirtysomething chef as he tries to settle down.
The likelihood of this finding a crossover audience is minimal due mainly to a verbose script that is light on insight, humour and innovation. It doesn’t help that the film takes the easy option of demolishing Alper’s liberal lifestyle as corrupt and contemptible instead of trying to salvage him in some way.
