The imagination of a young girl, living in a remote Icelandic fishing community in the late '30s, is so imbued with traditional superstition that she dreams herself back into the fourteenth century in order to fend off a family curse. Rather like a Nordic amalgam of Spirit of the Beehive and Venus Peter, this is a good-looking film that makes fine use of a harsh, dramatic landscape; but the adult performances, at least, tend towards the histrionic, and the whole is rather too self-consciously mysterious and slowly paced for its own good.
