‘The Berlin Years’ is a love letter to Audre Lorde: lesbian, feminist and poet. In the mid-eighties, Lorde made it her mission to mentor black German women to fight against racism and sexism, and to galvanize their capacity for independence and self- expression. The film is charmingly low-key: a handheld camera ambles through the most intimate of Audre’s memories in an unedited, DIY home-movie style which serves to celebrate her defining characteristic: sincerity. All in all, a soulful document of one woman who practiced what she preached with clarity and humor.
