It's our favourite title of the year so far, but this Indian coming-of-age tale has nothing to do with vomiting. Or does it - the title actually comes from a popular Indian sweetmeat made from condensed milk and sugar, which sounds fairly dangerous. But that aside, the film itself sounds sweet enough: the tale of three young Indians – a deaf-mute, a girl with mental difficulties and the young man she falls for – reaching maturity in the 1970s, this is a plea for tolerance and an understanding of humanity's differences. Director Anurag Basu's last film 'Kites' was set in the Mexican desert, but 'Barfi!' sees him returning home for a populist melodrama featuring three of the country's biggest young stars.
