This moving documentary follows the efforts of two seemingly ordinary women—Patti Quigley and Susan Retik, whose husbands were killed in the September 11 attacks—to raise money for Afghan women widowed by the subsequent war in that country. The two Americans reflect on their own grief and on their ambivalence about being viewed as “9/11 widows,” but most of Beyond Belief is refreshingly outward-looking: The second half is devoted to Quigley and Retik’s 2006 trip to Afghanistan, where they finally meet some of their Afghan counterparts face-to-face.
