Set in colonial Trinidad of the '40s, and using the racial conflict between Indian sugar-cutters and black Trinidadians as the dramatic spring (centred on a Harder They Come-type fugitive outlaw protagonist), Bim continually throws up intriguing facets of the social texture. Best is the casual acceptance of violence (if not fear or pain) as a fact of life; worst is the treatment of the avuncular British godparents of independence, looking for all the world as if there were no past of colonial exploitation to answer for.
