Based on a real-life case of racial injustice, this TV drama writ large follows two lone souls—African-American activist Ben Chavis (Parker) and a progressive white preacher (Schroder)—as they struggle to combat Southern inhospitality in the socially charged ’70s. Once a killing kicks off righteous rioting and redneck rage, it’s up to this ebony-ivory duo to face down a legacy of hate. You can’t deny the inspirational qualities of the story or Parker’s screen presence, any more than you could accuse the film of subtlety or of masking its conspicuous pro-Christian agenda.
