In this highly stylised, starkly elegant film, an old man returns to his village in 1946, only to face hostility and obscurely-motivated violence from his fellow villagers. Kolsky performs an artful, somewhat surreal analysis of the forces of hate, guilt and vindictiveness within a small community, in such a way that the film’s impressive performances and range of striking imagery rather transcend its ostensible subject matter. No matter – there are images here of a surpassingly moving bleakness. Recommended.
