The aging star of a popular Mexican telenovela (Llaca) becomes enraged when she learns that her producer-lover (Bracho) is replacing her in the soap’s feature-film version. It gets worse: Her youthful doppelgänger will be selected through an American Idol–style reality competition. Issa López’s ensemble comedy follows four contestants, each hailing from a distinct region and socioeconomic background, while attempting a meta-exposé on TV’s ageist, racist and classist nature. In using the urban poor and the queer community as punch lines, Casi Divas ultimately succumbs to its own criticism.
