Everyone has heard the maxim that long-distance relationships never work. In this film, Australian puppeteer Brian (later known as Aamir, after converting to Islam), and Amber, a conservative Pakistani Muslim, put that conventional wisdom to the test. From the moment Brian meets Amber while visiting Lahore, Pakistan, for a puppet show, this documentary embarks on a roller-coaster story of love, doubt, conflicting religions and ultimately perseverance on the couple's way to its “I do’s.” Not only distance but also mismatched cultures, perilous finances and even wavering commitments call into doubt whether these two can keep the fire burning. Offering a very raw presentation of this seemingly flowery story, director Faramarz K-Rahber thrives in capturing the essence of Pakistani traditions, and how these two lovers maneuver within them.—Sandy Torres, credit analyst
