East Asia’s seemingly unstoppable celluloid domination has seen work across the board mop up critically and financially over here. Now, if this startlingly slight rom-com is anything to go by, the generic barrel is being scraped for anything that’s left. From the first frame it’s clear I do not belong to the target demographic for this televisual fluff, but then it’s hard to decipher who exactly does; the playing in this Day-Glo film by numbers is so unengaging and surrounded by such trivialities. Siu-Man (Miriam Yeung) sells beer but doesn’t trust men who are drunk until freewheeling stranger, chef and boozer Michel (Daniel Wu) shows up. They start a restaurant business as friends; loving follows the loans; they quarrel, they split, they get back together. No surprises then in this frothy fable of entrepreneurial success and relational triumph over some odds. In the UK, this could have a tiny life on DVD, but for more reliable entertainment it might be preferable to take the title as the model for an evening on the town.
