Duffell's adaptation of Graham Greene'snovel retreads the path of both Cabaret and The Damned, but comes far closer to the spirit of Isherwood's Goodbye to Berlin. The film never allows its characters to be dwarfed by set pieces, and instead concentrates on conveying the ingenuous and ineffectual charm of a young Englishman (York) caught between the decadence and encroaching violence of Nazi Germany and a potentially incestuous twin sister (Neil). It's a pity that the film was unfairly neglected at the time, thereby throwing a hitch into Duffell's promising career.
