Time Out says

3 out of 5 stars

Can the tiny warrior Leafmen protect their queen and her magical rosebud, which will one day give them a future monarch? Or is the rosebud’s flowering threatened by the invasion of a dark force? Welcome to ‘Epic’, a Freudian lineage anxiety drama for all the family! This is the latest animation from Chris Wedge, director of ‘Ice Age’, who is working in the realm of the fairly traditional fairytale here.

As is customary in modern fairytales, the po-faced elements are lightened up with the injection of wacky comic relief, and it’s here that ‘Epic’ scores highly, with a pair of molluscs – a slug and a snail, voiced by Chris O’Dowd (‘The IT Crowd’) and Aziz Ansari (‘Parks and Recreation’) – who are actually pretty funny. It all feels very mid-’90s Disney and doesn’t have the adult crossover appeal of most Pixar or Studio Ghibli films. But if you’ve got youngish children and are looking for respite, look no further.
