Five college friends strike out on one last fling - and the buddy buddy coming of age road movie is born. Despite patronage from Steven Spielberg, Fandango made no box-office impact. There is a sense of déjà vu all right, but this is an extremely attractive valediction to youth, with farcical underpinnings ably handled by Reynolds. His potential as a film-maker has since been confirmed (check out The Beast), and his pal Costner (surely the most important star to emerge from the '80s: Howard Hawks would have loved him) holds this one together. As a consequence, the picture's jumpy tone is safely grounded in character.
