Time Out says

For all its blustering computer-generated action, this bloated tale of American fighter pilots in the Lafayette Escadrille during World War I comes off as oddly quaint. Lead hunk Rawlings (Franco) heads to France after losing his family’s ranch, and hooks up with a squadron of volunteers enlisting for various clichd motives. Lest we’re feeling schmaltz-deprived, the chiseled hero begins romancing a local Frenchwoman he meets in a whorehouse (relax: It turns out she was there only to deliver supplies). The fervent soundtrack reverberates through a series of by-the-numbers episodes, but Flyboys’ most compelling scenes are those at high altitudes.
