For his latest foray behind the camera, ‘Gosford Park’ screenwriter Fellowes has returned to the mansion house for an emotionally wise but logically skewed children’s tale of ghostly goings on. Evacuated to his grandmother’s crumbling country pile during the final days of World War II, Manchester lad Tolly (Etel) witnesses mysterious apparitions reenacting one of the house’s most horrific historical events. While Fellowes is unafraid to grapple with the moral and emotional complexities of his story – particularly a stark, powerful finale – his refusal to impose any kind of real-world logic on the narrative largely restricts the film’s appeal to bookish pre-teens.
