Second outing for Caine and Len Deighton (after The Ipcress File). This time the plot thickens almost to the point of congealing, with everybody seemingly tailing everybody else (you soon give up caring why) as Harry Palmer is despatched to Berlin to get the real story when a Russian intelligence colonel, chief of security on the Wall, is reported to be anxious to defect. Left to twiddle your thumbs while the plot gradually strangles, you can relish some nice location photography, two straightforward action sequences, and a lovely performance from Homolka as the bluffly sinister defector.
