Time Out says

3 out of 5 stars

Quirky indie romcom, family drama or insightful delve into depression? The jury’s still out on this one. Kristen Wiig is New York playwright Imogene, who after a severe bout of writer’s block and a bad break-up uses her dramatic flair to stage a fake suicide to win her ex back. Things don’t exactly go according to plan and Imogene is put into the care of her scatty mum (Annette Bening) and carted off to her own personal hell: New Jersey.

There’s great chemistry between Wiig and ‘Glee’ warbler Darren Criss, her hot young love interest, which takes the audience away from the somewhat plodding script. ‘Girl Most Likely’ is understated, fun and definitely ticks the mush-factor box. But it isn’t as laugh-out-loud as ‘Bridesmaids’, nor is it intended to be. Its message is more sentimental – about family, sticking to your roots and being true to yourself. There are fun moments – or ‘Wiigisms’ – and some great performances. But you can’t help but wonder what sort of film this would have been had Wiig been in charge of the screenplay.
